Toyota Prius PHV Hybrid Import Information and SEVS import eligibility for Australia

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid liftback is sold as the Prius PHV / Prius PHEV hybrid in Japan and the Prius Prime in the USA, Canada, South Korea and New Zealand.

Three Prius PHV / PHEV plug-in models and one standard hybrid model can be imported from Japan to Australia as none were sold here new by Toyota, this page deals with the 2017 to 2022 Toyota Prius PHV ZVW52:

Unlike the basic Prius hybrid sold new in Australia, the higher spec Prius PHV hybrid from Japan charges the battery while driving and braking (exactly like the standard Prius) PLUS can be directly charged from the grid / home solar enabling much greater fuel efficiency than the hybrid-only Prius.

In hybrid mode, the Prius PHV has an EPA-rated combined fuel economy of 4.4 L/100 km (22.73 km/L). This would be much improved with greater use in EV-only mode.

The Prius PHV would most benefit drivers that make short trips on EV-only each day then recharge from a home solar system.

The Prius PHV uses a 1.8 L 2ZR-FXE engine plus dual MG1 (23 kW) + MG2 (52 kW) electric motors and an 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery together with an eCVT transmission and Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

Electric range on EV-only mode is approx. 40 km which is twice the range of the first generation ZVW35 plug-in model.

The battery pack is also much larger than the 0.75 kWh unit used in the regular Prius hybrid of the same year.

Total driving range for the Prius plug-in is approx. 1,030 km.

In EV-only mode the Prius PHV produces up to 68 kW from the electric motor system and can travel at up to 135 km/h (35 km/h faster than the previous ZVW35 model).

Plug-in charging is via a 3.3 kW 100-240V on board charger.

Curb weight is 1,526 kg.

Our import agent service includes a pre-check for past auction records using JCHC, at no cost to you. This allows us to rule out:

• Cars recently auctioned and moved to a different auction for quick resale

• Graded R (accident repair) cars changed to higher grades

• Cars that have passed in unsold multiple times indicating a problem with the condition and/or price.

Our thorough Japan auction inspections include checks of engine, transmission, air conditioning / electrics plus pictures inside, outside and underneath showing options / features and any condition issues. Just like the auction history checks, in-person inspections at auction are all part of our service – no extra charge.

Following these rules and being very selective on quality allows us to consistently target first-time auctioned vehicles for our clients in the best condition and at the best price.

We also ensure that any outstanding factory recalls are completed prior to export from Japan, which is essential before import to Australia / SEVS compliance. *Recall work is free in Japan and will be arranged at no extra charge before your vehicle goes to the Port, but please note there will be a small transport charge (generally $200 to $300) to send the vehicle to the nearest Toyota dealer.

Once your Prius PHV has been exported from Japan all original paperwork and additional items such as spare keys and books are sent to you by EMS. This includes the Export Certificate (showing up to the last two re-registration inspection dates and odometer readings, depending on vehicle age) for your peace of mind.

Port clearance and compliance will be arranged for you, and registration can also be taken care of by the compliance workshop for your convenience.
